This was a simply written, not too heavy on the details book about the life of Queen Victoria. This is a great book for younger folk who are interested in history. It gives a great slice of life of Victorian times and the author tries to keep a balance between the events of the day and Victoria's home life, just maybe a bit through rose colored glasses. I found it fun light reading. There are no earth-shattering revelations about her life and times, but the book really makes her come to life with many of the anecdotes. It touches on her relationships with her Prime Ministers, with her children, and with other members of royalty throughout Europe. She was an incredible, amazing woman who carried her country with dignity, as a monarch first and a mother and woman second. You get a real feel for her relationship with Albert, and why she was so undone by his death. He seems to have softened her hard edges quite a lot. The book tries to downplay a lot of the less pleasant aspects of her personality, the selfishness, thoughtlessness and the fear she inspired in her own family. But that comes with being raised from early childhood that the world revolves around her! I recommend it for anyone who is interested in Queen Victoria and her era but doesn't want to slog through hundreds of pages with an infinite number of dates and details. Perhaps it sounds like 'Queen Victoria for Dummies' but it is much more than that. Definitely worth a look.Product details

This book offered great insight into Queen Victoria's life and found it a very interesting story. The book was well written.
I'm on a Queen Victoria kick. I've been reading many different books about her, her family and the victorian era. I found the book informative, well written and enjoyable.
My son actually liked this book the most of all of his school books this year.
Even though this seemed romanticized to a degree, it was interesting and informative.
We are reading this aloud as part of Tapestry of Grace Year 3 curriculum. My 7 and 5 yr old children have followed along easily and especially enjoyed learning about the young Queen Victoria. I have found it engaging as well and look forward reading each chapter. Some of the situations that Victoria finds herself in are very amusing. The children sometimes miss the humor, but a quick explanation in modern English is usually enough to have them giggling along with me.
This was a wonderful book to catch a glimpse of the 1800s. My junior high and high school students will be reading it this year! Queen Victoria played an important part of the 1800s.
From start to finish this book reads like a story. Plenty of historical facts, but jumbled into descriptions of dresses and gowns. Un- tangling the many names of her children as well as their spouses, let alone their titles was confusing. A diagram would have been helpful. I feel I have a better understanding overall and can read on with a better understanding of her life..com
